A big hello from team at Waterloo!
We have two halls, in which we run two consecutive classes throughout the evening. Doors open at 6:50pm, where you will be welcomed by our wonderful door people, who will inform you of the evening and how it all works.
- In the Main Hall, we kick the evening off with a beginners class at 7pm, followed by an improvers class at 8:15pm.
- Mean while in the Rotunda Hall, we have an intermediate class at 7pm, followed by an advanced class at 8:15pm.
- Last classes both finish at 9:15pm, where we vacate the building by 9:30pm, and we invite you to join us for drinks and a chat till about 10pm.
Level 1 – Absolute beginners class in the Main Hall | 7pm – 8pm
These classes are for new dancers and there is no experience required. We go over the basics every week and then throw in some new moves to get you dancing in no time. This class is drop-in, so you don’t need to book in advance and you don’t need to bring a partner.
Level 2 – Intermediate class in the Rotunda Hall | 7pm – 8pm
A class for improving dancers who have started their social dancing journey and are wanting to move on and learn about musicality, lead/follow technique, rhythm, etc… Requirements: You should have experience of 20s Charleston, 30s Charleston, 6 and 8 count Lindy Hop including your swing out, and you can social dance to a song. If you’re starting to social dance regularly (or have been for a while) and want a little more lead/follow clarity in your life, this is the place to be!
Level 1.5 – Improvers class in the Main Hall | 8.15pm – 9.15pm
Interested in taking it one step further? If you were comfortable in the first level 1 class, then we encourage you to stick around. This class will generally build from the footwork learnt in the level 1 class from the same evening. We will also start you on your journey towards the social dance floor, the etiquette and floor-craft that is involved. Together, we’ll guide you step-by-triple-step to your first social dance.
Level 3 – Intermediate Advanced class in the Rotunda Hall | 8.15pm – 9.15pm
If you have not attended a Level 3 class before at Waterloo, we invite you to take part in the class where we assess if your level of dancing is competent enough. Before the class, please make yourself known to the teachers so we can explain the process to you as a group with others who are also being assessed at that time. We do this to ensure that the learning in the classes can move at the desired pace. We expect you to be able to follow or lead small pieces of choreography on demand, to a reasonable level of competency and to tempos above 150-160bpm. Understanding and being able to dance a musical phrase will be beneficial. At the start of the class, we will be inspecting the levels of all the dancers as individuals through means of rotating partners, and then tailoring the class material to the students who attend. Higher the level of students who attend, the higher level of learning we can provide. In this class, we will cover more technique and revisit your basics.
